the zip drive is the only scsi device?, not sure if its important or not but try id 0 for the zip drive, the cards are usually id 7 by default. mabey its the adapter?

hmm, you try some hiren tools? cant remember off hand wich ones, but there was some that could erase hard drive passwords, like on ibm laptops. mabey a usb to ide adaptor?

i had that problem, found a small cut on the instalation of the fd cable cause it rubbed the chassis. try a different drive/cable next time it happens.
