Anyone know how to get something like the clock screensaver in Win9x/NT/2K/XP to display in Win3.1? Even the "scrolling marquee" would be fine if I could figure out how to do it. Just got a PS/Valuepoint back up and running with DOS6.22/Win3.1 (Upgraded CPU to a Evergreen K5-133/40MB RAM/508MB HDD/50xCD/Jumbo250 Tape). This is now the "dedicated DOS/Win3.1/Geos system" (sadly replaced a PS/2 Model 80 which finally bit the dust)...

Doesn't Windows 3.1 (or WFW3.11) have the scrolling marquee screen saver?

Yes, but there's no way to put the "time" in it that I can tell...

Try searching for "clock" on these pages:
http://www.filelibrary.com/Contents/Windows/132/12.html
http://www.filelibrary.com/Contents/Windows/132/9.html

I just did a quick Google search... The file library at channel 1 seems to be pleasantly outdated Smile

I see what you mean. I guess it's time for a few tricks...

1) See if you can pull the stuff off the site from archive.org.
2) If you see something interesting, do a search on that.
3) Write your own. (I know--not always a possibility. (-Wink
4) Go to the host's main site and see what's up.

I've found a clock screen saver for win3.1 on an old backup cd if you want it:

Glad it's of use Smile (one of the advantages of hardly ever deleting *anything* Razz)
Actually, I quite liked that screen saver when I had 3.11, might use it for a while on XP.

Deletion is for getting rid of things that should never have been put there in the first place. Desktop icons, program groups that are uselessly nested, old config files from programs you stopped using a long time ago and removed. (...but kept the install in case you want it again.)

At 47 GB for $10, space is cheap. (Ok, so it's $50 for the DVD-burner, $5-10 for a storage method, and $10 for 10 bulk DVD-Rs. It still beats new HDs, though.)

Agreed. The machine I've "re"-built is largely going to be used to recover some tape backups from my "first real computer" (486DX33). At the time (1994), tape was the only backup medium I could justify. So far I've only run into 1 tape that didn't survive 10+ years. The restore process is a little cumbersome... 1. Restore from tape. 2. Transfer to Zip using a parallel port Zip drive. 3. Move to Celery 600 (it has a USB Zip). 4. Backup to CD-R.

Sounds like you need to network.
1. Restore from tape to network drive.
2. Backup to CD.

If you use NetBEUI, DOS will have no problem with connecting to network drives even on a 386. TCP/IP, though, needs more memory...

I think the only real disadvantage of keeping almost everyone, is finding what you want in a reasonable amount of time. Especially when you have loads of backup cds & dvds. My current method is to store a dir listing (dir /s) of each cd on my pc, and search that for whatever I’m after.

Yeah, I know. I'm not real keen about wiring an old house (c. 1941) for something I can really sneaker-net around. With the 2 systems in the den, 1 in the kitchen, 2 in bedrooms, and 6 active machines in my shop, it'd take a lot of work. I'm pretty content just having backups of stuff as I download it. I'm starting to pick back up on Win3.1, and (nostalgically) recreating what I had before.

Yeah, I've taken to having an index.txt file at the root of everything I'm backing up. Much more helpful than just writing "Stuff" on the CD.

With 2000+ CD-R's at my disposal, I've got room for just about everything I ever had and then some...

I take it the machines you're using are quite a ways apart. I tend to have "clusters" of computers (in the physical sense--not the computer sense) so it's real easy to run a 10-ft cable to a switch and connect two computers.

For those of us with houses we can't rewire for one reason or another, it's either wireless (which works differently according to 100+ variables) or putting up with a few trunk lines. I really need to put that trunk line on a 100 m/bit switch... (I need to get another one lol)

You could use a database to keep track of the file names on your CDs then just organize your discs to make it easy to find... but for most people that's too much unnecessary work.
