I plugged a cable into the USB port of my mother's computer's UPS, and Windows XP automagically recognized it and started monitoring its status. When the power went out tonight (it's still out, but I'm bored and my laptop's got a full battery), Windows determined the UPS battery was getting low and put the computer in hibernation.

This is the way hardware is supposed to work. No configuration, no stupid software, just plug it in and watch it work. :-)

Yeah, I gotta admit (slightly grudgingly) that XP is pretty good about stuff like that. Bought a APC 750 on amazon.com for my "big" machine (running XP Pro) and a APC 350 @ wally-world (I loathe going in there) for the backup machine in the "new shop" running Win2K. Like to have never gotten the 350 working correctly. Is it just me, or has the price of UPS's dropped dramatically in the past couple years? Question Shocked

You know, I've been meaning to pick one of those up for a long while now. Smile That's pretty interesting that it can "talk" the UPS like that w/ such ease.

...also, perhaps prices have decreased due to an increase in battery technology? UPS' are dirt cheap last time I went to go "pick one up" (even though in the end I didn't)
