I recently picked up another 5150 to play around with it, and it came with an interesting surprise-
A 386/16 accelerator card with 1mb of memory which sat in an ISA slot and conntected via a ribbon cable to where the 8088 cpu would normally sit-
When I looked up the FCC id number, it came out to be manufactured by intel-
not in my entire life have I run accross such an odd thing - I've seen 186 and 286 accelerator cards in the past, but never a 386-

Any documentation on this oddball or a clue to what it is really called?

Also for some reason, my regular username (Cprossu) I cannot seem to register on this board- it gives me "Sorry, but this username has been disallowed."

any way I can get this name changed over so I don't have another name to keep track of in forums? (yeah I know how silly it sounds)

Intel Above-Board 386.

Actually it wasn't that uncommon of a board in its day. But info on it is scarce today.

Sorry, but a rash of spammers put a lot of potential user names on the "banned" list. We've only recently curbed the spammers, and still need to whittle down the blocked-username list. 386page.com is an example of what goes wrong with a phpbb board that isn't blocking names (Sorry, john, but you're over 850 members, with only 50 or so of them being "real")...

a note on the intel 386 bpard ror the ibm pc/xt
there was a special edition of windows required.
may have been a variant on windows 3.0.
I have one of those boards somewhere.

in those days, few cared anything about windows.

Hmm, that explains a few problems I had. I remember trying to install windows 386 and having it only work in the base mode, I couldn't use virtual memory.

i am pretty good at recallingb old and obsolete stuff.
but seem to get puzzled trying to do very simple and modern stuff.
Oh i can use a microwave and stuff like that and can operate a car with a microprocessor.
and even a dvd player.
but try to ignore many newer things ( like xp and firewire)
I prefer old cameras and stuff that isn't even in the " modern photography 1983 buying guide" ( too new)

all I know is that it sure weirded me out seeing that thing....

as soon as I find where the heck my XT keyboards are I will get back to you on what the hdd contains....

got the thing booted, from what I gathered, the beast I own is called in it's full name, a "Intel Inboard 386/PC" which has 1MB ram onboard and as one of you said, will only run a special brewed version of windows 3.0....

I have no intention of running that, since I don't have a copy, and it's a messed up OS anyway......

lets see, it came with Quicken5, a really old version of Norton Commander, Lotus 123, the Inboard driver files (Although not all of em, if anyone here has a file called iNBRDPC.sys, it would be very nice!), Q&A, a utility called LeMenu, an ancient version of laplink, First Choice, TurboTax ('93), and good ole dos 5, no games except gorilla.bas and nibbles.bas though...

I have a whole slew of antique/vintage cameras if you want to buy some. It would be nice to get them to a home where they can be "treated right". (Instead of sitting in a box in the deepest reaches of my closet). Let me know if you're interested and I'll post some models I have.

About the 386 board though, that's pretty cool. Do you notice that much of a performance boost? I mean Win3.0 could run on an 8086 processor, with this "special brew" version could you run it in anything besides real mode? (aka useless mode Razz

)

well, it does run dos proggies really fast,
it's just like having a 386/16 dos computer in most reguards...
also it's nice and speedy on free space calculations on the dir command Rolling Eyes

I've just bought one of these for my IBM Portable PC, however I am in need of the drivers, which include:

o INBRDPC.SYS provides features to let you get the
most from the Inboard 386/PC, such as extended
memory, changing speed with control keys, and
faster system and screen performance.

o ISTATPC.EXE displays the status of the
INBRDPC.SYS settings.

o ICACHE.COM stores data from the computer's hard
disk in Inboard 386/PC memory so disk reads are
faster.

o ILIM386.SYS turns extended memory into expanded
memory.

o ILIM386.COM displays the status of all the
memory in the computer, including on Inboard
386/PC.

o ISPEEDPC.EXE changes speed from the DOS prompt
or from a batch file.

o CHKCOP.EXE verifies that the optional 80387 math
coprocessor is installed correctly.
