It's was less common than the "Kirk-era" Spock (which I used to use), and I don't like commonality...

I gather you've also searched the ARI-Service site?:

*UPDATE*

Found (what I thought would be) the manual. Unfortunately, it's for the Superpak and the Advantage!...

Sorry...

i have tried ari. that's more for the systems, that was the site that helped me partially get together my AST 386sx-20 that i have floatin around.

I got the card to see all 1mb ram on board too, and found the ems driver to go with it. My question now is this. Is it worth it to pull my longshine FDC Multi IO card and turn on all the ports that are on the AST card and put in a standard floppy controller? or just leave the ram part active and the longshine multi i/o onboard, and why can't i use a 16450 chip on either of them. is the 16450 limited to 16 bit bus? whereas the 8250 is 8-bit?

This may help your decision on the UART (or may just confuse matters):

ok, that clears it up a bit, the pc and pc/xt will NEVER be able to see a 16450-16650 uart. EVER, due to the bios being reliant on the bugs in the 8250 uart, i'll just stuff the 8250 uarts back on then.. dammit..

Thought so. The 8088 CPU just wasn't designed for the speeds that newer equipment can provide...

the problem is the BIOS of the xt and origional pc specifically. It was written to compensate for bugs in the chip, sucks, but unless i get an 8088 or 8086 turbo xt to try it on, unless i can modify my ps/2 model 30 for it, i won't know if the 16450 will work or not

all three uats will work
I never heard of a bug in the xt bios to comensate for the early uart chip
a AT style i/o card either with a discrete uart of one made im a smt type chip would work

and they were all PIN COMPATIBE
as I said, the common at i/o card had no space for that big 40 pin chip
instead it was part of a postage stamp sized surface mount chip
HOWEVER a 16450 is about all you will ever need in an 8088.
the 16559 was only needed in faster machines
even beyond a 286.
but I think some features of the 16550 could be utilized by a 286 system.

the only upgrade for a 8088 was a nec v20. which by the way did not always say "v 20" on the chip.

the 8086 and , I believe the V30, were pin compatible with each other
but NOT pin compatible with an 8088.

Only a few made 8086 machines, IBM among them.

there was a speedup program for the V20,. think it was called "fastv20"
and within the v20 was other code to run oither programs. . possibly some cp/m stuff.

nuh-uh, all 3 uarts won't work, and the multi i/o cards i have have the 40 pin socket, the 8250 is removable and replacable which i have done, still no dice. BUT i did try it in my zenith Z158 and it seea the 16450-16650 uarts.. It's an ibm issue..
