let me make sone very general suggestuions.
First i upgraded forst to w 200 than to win xp as some websited had problems dealing with win 98.
there is a cumulative patch for 98 that adds all
or most of microsoft patches and updates,.

there is a problem with ram over 51megk. sometimes 640 megs of ram. this is a win 98 problem NOT a chipset problem
[Vcache]
MaxFileCache=524288

(add to system.ini to prevent locklups
Other things that may screw up performance is too large a hd partition. usually 40g works.

No matter what some websites will be flakey.

windows 9x works fine, its the interaction of various google amazon ads that create chaos with my various web browsers. I have to block them in the hosts file to get any joy but it does not block them completely and the browser has a component hang up waiting for the site (even worse if I remove the hosts file)

This makes the browser freeze for an indeterminant amount of time, sometimes it comes back, other times all over.

If one browser hangs up it hangs up every other type of browser, this issue was brought up long ago by mozilla users and it still appears to affect the modern browsers now and again as well, not sure what the solution is.
