my setup is simple
a 40g 20g & 20g and a 160g 40/40/40/40

with 98 it seems to follow trhe same rules as DOs
20 / 40 /20 40 /40 /40 that is the 1st partition of each physical drive
is first and the logical (extended partitions follow.

Yesterday I wanted to watch a tv show that I had missed and that requires w 2000. So I installed my tested and working driev with windows 2000/ I wanted access to my other files, so I left the 160 connected to the 2nmd ide port ( 40/40/40/40)
the w98 drive was a 40 ( 20/20). the 2nd 20g was always E
and "first" on the 160 was D: ( I named the 160 FIRST,SECOND,THIRD,FOURTH ) how original!

I had disconneted the c/e 20/20g drive and plugged in the
w 2000 drive on the first ide port.

when I was done viewing the tv show, I unpligged the w 200 drive and plugged in the 40g 20/20gb w 98 drive.

BUT now the 20/20 is c/d and the 160 is e/f/g/h

I can understand w 2000 reassigning drive letters, but an surprised that the re-assignment stays when I revert back to windows 98. the w2000 drive is not connecvted .
I only use fat 32.
how does it do it? I have looked at the 4 partitions and see no adeded directoies or files
BTW when I set up the new drive it will be 5 32gb, not 4 40gb
as 98 seems to work best with the 40gb
but win 2000 supposedly hjas a 32gb limit for a fat 32 partition.
I think it ONLY affects the operating system partition and NOT a data storage partition. I will be using both OS for a while
but don't want a dual boot system
seems everytime I set up w2000 the install crashes soon afterwards.
especially when the drive is pulled out of a drawer.

If I recall correctly, you can reassign drive letters via a control panel applet in Windows 98. I know you can in Windows NT-based systems.

Windows 98 and 2000 probably won't switch back and forth nicely. They're built on two different technologies, and each one thinks it owns the computer. Personally, I would set up Windows 2000 and forget about Windows 98. I'd also reformat the drives with NTFS, and not use the ill-developed FAT32.

If you absolutely must have Windows 98, you can download Microsoft Virtual PC (FREE!) and use that. (It may require a later version of Windows.)

ithe cd 20/20 seemed to hold
but after a 3rd redo it reverted back to the old way c-20 d-40 e-20 f=-40 etcthe cables are undisturbed and the drives are on the mb
only time I move cables is when I move the cable for 20/20 c/d to the 10g w2000 drive. leaving the 40/40/40/40 drive alone.
I just watch tv on the w2000 drive.
