I was bored so I decided to see if Netscape Navigator 1.0 would work in XP, and surprisingly it does. However not many sites will load up in it obviously so I started looking for some gopher sites and found a great one. This is really awesome, it feels just like the old days. Load up Netscape 1.0 or your favorite ancient browser and go to gopher://gopher.quux.org/ Very Happy

I made some screenshots of Netscape 1.0 a few ages ago; you can see them here if you want.

Netscape Navigator 1.0 was the first web browser I personally used, so I can hold it reverance for that fact alone. Wink Obviously, it isn't practical for anything nowadays, but that's to be expected for something with only a few months' development work from 11 years ago. There were a lot of improvements in versions 1.1 and 1.2; fairly impressive considering that they were released only a few months later!

As for the Gopher site, that's a nice find. There aren't too many of those around anymore.

mf_2, visit the site... There's a bit of an explanation there. Your modern browser should be able to handle it. (If not, have you considered Mozilla?)

From what I gather, gopher is like HTTP. It controls loading of pages and such.

I dunno (yet), but that just made me think of this

[caddytshack]Carl Spackler: License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote[/caddyshack]

"Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers they'll lock me up and throw away the key?"

"Not golfers, you great fool! Gophers!"

I love that movie. Very Happy

Does evolt.org work again? I came across that page about 3 to 4 years ago, but the download links were mostly broken.

If you're looking for downloading old Netscapes, I believe Netscape offers them at their own site in their archive...
