I've got a 17" monitor that sits below my speakers for the computer. (They're mounted just above it.) When the monitor is on, I get a fuzz or hum but when I shut the monitor off, the speakers are quiet. There's not much room for play, maybe 8 inches between the top of the tube at the back and top of the shelf and 4-5 between the top of the monitor at its highest and the shelf. The speakers, about 3" wide, are mounted above this point.

What can I do to quiet everything down, short of getting a new monitor? I haven't tried anything yet, except changing the cable that goes between computer and speakers.

Shielded speakers are a must if they're going to be close to a CRT. I actually got a really good deal for some at the geeks. If you're going to keep them and can't move them further away from the monitor (and this may sound a little silly), you could line the insides with aluminum foil--add some sort of adhesive to make sure it can't come loose and short something out....

I couldn't do anything with the foil to reduce or eliminate the noise. After unplugging everything except power, the CRT noise remained.

I decided to do what I didn't want to do, and replaced the monitor. I got my LCD from upstairs, and put an IBM 8515 on that computer. (There's no room for anything bigger.) The noise is all but gone, and I'm short 384x288 pixels in resolution...
