It seems for everything I fix, three more things break. This weekend I finally got around to repairing my 486's power supply, and I ended up losing my XT's power supply, the XTs 1.44meg drive, and my VLB Pentiums hard disk. It's pretty annoying. It makes me want to convert my entire line over to CF cards.

Does anyone in here know how to service XT power supplies? I have a spare, but I'd like to fix the original.

Do you have power surges or humidity issues? If you are not a member try joining the classic computer mailing list, people there can help you.

How handy are you with electricity? If you know your way around really well, XT power supplies should be repairable. If you're not 100% sure, power supplies aren't something to be messing around with.

Some areas do have bad power. I got a new quality ATX power supply that shut the computer down several times due to bad power. Once I put it on a UPS it quit shutting down.

Yes, I think you are right. The power at my location just stinks.

I am somewhat capable of fixing the power supply. It's not like I really have much of a choice anyway.

UPDATE:

Well, I guess some good came from the situation. I had previously upgraded my 5150 with an XT power supply, so I just stuck it back into the XT and reverted to the 63.5W and a dual floppy setup. I guess I never spent much time on the 5150...but now it's running quite nicely with an external SCSI drive, Sound Blaster 2.0 and an AST Rampage EMS board. While I was in there I also found a nice Intel Etherexpress that I had forgotten about.
