The kiddos want to get on the internet at home with the gameboy DS, and I gave away my $2 wireless router a while back.
We have a wireless card in a computer, and the computers are on a LAN that is connected to the internet broadband thru another router.
Is there any way to make the wireless card in the one computer act as a wireless network access point?
OS is windows 2000 pro |

I've tried that countless times and I never had any success, so I ended up buying an access point.
My main problem is that when trying to use a gateway for the wireless card it just wouldn't work! I had 192.168.0.10 as an ip for the wireless card, 192.168.0.1 was the router and 192.168.0.9 was the computer's lan card. the 192.168.0.9 card had the router as a gateway. the wireless card had a gateway too, but it was the lan card ( 192.168.0.9 ). while this might work in theory it certainly never worked ( for me ) in reality. I don't know why. as I said I just bought an access pont ( from buffalo ) and I'm really satisifed with it. Tomorrow I'll buy a stronger antenna. also if you use an ap, no additional computer has to run if you want to use the internet from a wireless computer. |

As far as I know only some wifi cards can be put into ap mode. I know you can buy a kit that runs linux on a small single board computer and can use pcmcia wifi cards (it puts them into ap mode somehow). I saw this on techtv a while back (before 802.11g came out) |

You can possibly set up an "adhoc" wireless network. I did that to allow my little sister to use the hotel internet (ethernet !!!) from her laptop at the same time I did.
Take a look at www.geeks.com for a PC Card that will do what you want it to. |
