After much searching and a lucky idea, I have this iBook online via WiFi not only not using an AirPort card, but using a third-party USB card.
For those interested, it's a ZyDas ZD1211 chipset card, with the drivers for OS X downloaded from ZyDas's website. The readme.rtf file included had no useful information in it, so you're on your own.

OS X Panther 10.2.8 set up instructions for ZD1211-based wireless cards
Here's what you need to do:
1. Download and Install the driver (http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211.asp).
2. When done, go in to system preferences.
3. Open the Network settings first. It should tell you a new adapter has been found.
4. Set the TCP/IP settings for your network (in my case DHCP) and click "Apply Now" If you're in a hurry, just click "Apply now."
5. Go back to the system preferences window. Look for the ZyDas icon and open that.
6. Hopefully you'll see a card listed and see it pick up your access point. If so, great. If not, you'll have to mess around more to get it to that point. (Good luck.)
7. Note the SSID that you see, and click on "More Setting..."
8. Click "Change" and enter the SSID in the SSID field.
9. Set any other options for those on your network.
10. When done, click "Apply"
11. Click OK to exit.
12. When you exit, if you've associated with the AP you shoud have two meters showing on the bottom. Note that you're not authenticated, just associated. (It knows about you, but you can't do anything.)
13. Return to the networks option, and verify everything there is correct. If you use DHCP, make sure you're getting a valid IP address. If not, enter something (a number for example) in the DHCP Client field and press "Apply Now." This will tell the system to get a new address.
14. Once you've got a DHCP address, close the windows you opened and go play. : - )
