03/02/91 Just let me start off saying anytime someone tells you that something is easy, ask them if there is anything to watch out for.In most cases after you have finished and mention certain things, they will suddenly remember they had the same problem. So before you add a second hard drive read below. 1.You will need DOS 3.3 OR higher OR a disk manger program. 2.Extra small cable that runs to second hard drive. 3.Remove the resistor pack on the drive you add. 4.Enter the drive type in your setup program. 5.Type FORMAT D:(no /s) then run FDISK NOW WE INTERRUPT THIS PROCEDURE FOR A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR 1.The "C" drive is formated and has programs on plus system files. 2.The "D" drive is formated and has " NO SYSTEM FILES NO AUTOEXEC.BAT " 3.The "D" drive is formated by FORMAT C: "NO /S" 4.You do this in the C: position with the resistor on.. If you bought the drive brand new you will have no problem, but what if you got it used. The drive contains system files and when you power it up the computer will be unable to figure out which is the system drive. So by formating the drive in the "C:" position no problems will occur. Some have even said that booting off a floppy would solve the problem.I think when the system comes up it looks at the hard drives then it boots of the floppy. Some say to use DEBUG thats ok if you like to make things harder.I like to do things in a logical but simple way. A QUICK REVIEW 1.DOS 3.3 OR HIGHER if lower you will need a disk manager program. 2.DOS below 3.3 does not support a second hard drive without adding a driver program from disk manager. 3.Change the drive type in the setup if the drive is different. 4.Format the drive in the "C:" position with the resister in. 5.Drive "C:" has your files your IO-HIDDEN-DRIVERS it should be disconected laying off to the side (not in the picture yet!) 6.The "D:" drive is only formated and FDISK no "/S" system files. NOW take the "C:" drive and put it on the end of the cable (farthest from the controler board the "D:" drive (in the middle connecter).REMOVE THE RESISTOR NOW from the "D:" drive the one closest to the controler board. Turn on computer if it boots up you may be there.Type D:"RETURN" if you get a "D:"prompt good if not....OOOHHH...I did not tell you about the .....CABLE with the twist and the cable without the twist. 1.With the cable with the twist you set both drives (drive select to 2) 2.With the cable without the twist you set "C:"to 1 "D:"2 Well I hope I have saved you some trouble.I went crazy when I tried,so simple when you know how.My trouble was that I knew the second drive should not have the system files but I could not remove them with drive in the "D:" position. Some of you are probably saying I knew that,(yea! right). P.S. take the resistor pack and put it in a little piece of paper and tape it out of the way on the drive with a note what its for.... Forewarned is four-armed!
